Good old Sallie Mae, when I think of that name all I can think of is debt coupled with frustration and despair. It could be a bit overwhelming when I look at my student loan amounts on my credit report which totals upward of $250,000 (interest included). This affects my debt to income ratio which then affects my credit buying power. I didn’t accrue this debt in undergraduate school but yet it began in graduate school. The schools I chose to attend for graduate school were esteemed institutions but too expensive for my economic situation at the time.
Student loan debt is now one of the largest financial burdens on Americans all over the country. The question arises, How did we get in this state? It all began with that mighty dollar bill$$$ :). The federal government started guaranteeing student loans in 1965 and that’s when we started to see a snowball effect of every inner-city high school system pushing us to go to college and participate in the student loan process, the ease of borrowing money for school was simple and easy which has evolved over time.
These are some general facts about student loan debt in the US
The most recent data indicates there is:
• $1.64 trillion in total U.S. student loan debt
• 44.7 million Americans have student loan debt
• 11.1% of student loans are 90 days or more delinquent or are in default
• Monthly student loan payments (among those not in deferment) usually range between $200 and $299 on average

These facts are alarming and have major effects on Americans when it comes to being able to survive in this economy. With the idea of total student loan forgiveness being loosely thrown around by our esteemed elected officials in congress, there may be hope for total eradication of this financial beast we call student loans. I went from school to school, studied month to month, year to year searching for something to complete me when all along my lifetime’s work was right there in front of my face; letting my voice be heard and received while living a Transparent Lifestyle.
